' ' f J . r PIONEER REMEMBERS DUSTY AND MUDDY STREETS - Mrs. Sarah Swift reminisces on birthday "Salt Lake City certainly has undergone a lot of changes since I first saw it," observed Mrs. Sarah Swift on the afternoon of her birthday Friday. The Telegram extends congratulations to Mrs. Swift. Found crocheting at her home, 926 East Fourth South street, Mrs. Swift was In a reminiscent mood. "I came here in ISM with a handcart hand-cart company, ahe explained. "Of course, 1 don't remember the city as it was then, for I was just a baby. "However, I ran remember when we had to make our own candles with greaae and a rag or a string for a wick. That was before we were able to get factory-made candles can-dles from the east. "I can remember, too, that our home on tha northeast corner of Eighth East and Fourth South streets was practically out in the county. There were no sidewalks and It was quite a walk to town, what with the dust ankle deep at some times of the year and the mud Just as deep at other times. The short, active pioneer lives with her daughter, Pearl Swift, and does most of the housework. She spends any spare minutes knitting and crocheting. "I learned to knit when I was years old and I have spent a great deal of my time knitting ever since," she said. As evidence of her ability along that line, she proudly exhibited ex-hibited a certificate signed by the late President Woodrow Wilson lauding her for the knitting she had done for tha soldiers during the World war. Mrs. Swift's other daughter, Mrs. Alice Condie, plans a dinner in her honor Friday evening at Mrs. Con-die's Con-die's home, 702 Windsor street.
