Show TWO ROBBERS SLAIN IN BATTLE PORT HURON, Mich, Nov. 1 (INS) Two suspected postoffloe robber were shot and killed today when they were trapped In the tiny, one-atory wooden postoffic In the' village of Smtih's Creek, near here, by federal and county officers. The officers poured a withering fir of tear gas, rifle, shotgun, ub- tbe building after bullets greeted their demands for the suspects to surrender. Sound of the firing brought the entire village population of 300 to the streets. Bodies' Riddled The bodies of the suspects, riddled rid-dled with bullets, were' brought to a morgue here. . Sheriff William Van Antwerp said one of the dead men had been identified as John (Shorty) Novak, 88, a Detroit hoodlum with a long police record. The second man, about 42, remained unidentified, but authorities hoped to trace him through a card bearing the name Edward 8herer found in bis pocket. The trap had been set since Sunday Sun-day by authorities after Harry J. Neil, owner of the general store at Smith's Creek and a deputy sheriff, aaw lwo-jnan. prowling around the postoffice with flashlights Saturday Satur-day night Neil had kept the vigil then to guard his store from Halloween Hal-loween pranksters. Guard Placed He Informed postal inspector at Detroit, and a guard was set. Shortly after midnight, two men were seen entering the building. Officers surrounded It and then ordered the men to come out. When they refused, police tossed a tear gas bomb through the window win-dow In the building. A burst of gunfire was the answer. Officer then poured a deadly stream of shotgun and machine gun fir into -the .building through the window. Both men inside were killed. |
