Show GLEANING PLANT STRIKE GALLED; PICKETSPLACED Manager Says Union Did Not Allow Time to Act A strike of Cleaning and Dye House Workers' union member at the Myer Cleaning and Dyeing company, 114 East Broadway, was called at 13: SO p. m. Wednooday. Three picket were placed at the mmtm kll-hiMAItt Mark Cornaby, prealdent of local union No. U, aaid the walkout waa called because of refusal of the firm to negotiate. He indicated strike would be called at other plants should they refuse to sign a contract, to be presented pre-sented during the dsy. Of 23 firms in the city, eight have signed tha contract and 14 remain to be contacted, Mr. Cornaby aaid. Ray Smith, manager of the Myers company, aald he had not been given time to act on the proposed contract. "I was approached for the first time at 11 a. m. today," Mr. Smith-said. Smith-said. "I was asked then to sign. Things aren't don that easily and, sines this la a corporation,- I could not act alone. "The union has 20 or 26 member working her and they all are on striks. With the rest of the 40 employes, em-ployes, ws are operating under crip-pied crip-pied conditions." Mr. Smith aaid ha would "replace the striking employe Just as quickly quick-ly as possible. "Many of the workers who struck were receiving wages higher than those asked in the contract," he asserted. Mr. Cornaby aaid all "key workers" work-ers" at the company walked out. The contract, he said, calls for a 44-hour week, weekly pay days and the following minimum wages: ADorentices. tl a -week: cleaners. $25; dyera, $30; fancy spotters, (30, and machine pressers, 123. In most cases, ha aaid,. these wages represent increases. A meeting of Myers employes was called for 7 p. m. Wednesday at the Newhouse hotel All cleaning and dyeing workers of the city were called to meet at the Labor tempi at 7:30 p. m. on Thursday. F. H. Latter, business representative represen-tative of local No. 222, International Internation-al Union of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Stablemen and Helpera, aald a "sympathy" strike of Myer union drivers would be called. He called them to meet at the Labor temple late Wednesday afternoon. |
