Liner Is 'Sunk' In Sham War SOUTHAMPTON, S a f 1 a n - July If UPt Tha luxury liner Queen Mary rested mythically today on the bottom of the Atlantic At-lantic ocean aouth of Ireland, "sunk" by an attacking cruiser in Britain's vast war sames. The steamship, bound tor New Tork, was shelled theoretically by the cruiser Southampton of an attacking "blue" battle fleet before the,"red"r fleet and air squsdrons protecting the English channel located the "invader." The "attack" was staged in the closing hours of a fortnight of naval "combat" over an are stretching from tha Azores to tha English channel, in connection con-nection with land maneuvers which for the last two daya kept all southern England west of a Una from London to Bristol Bris-tol In a "state of war." The demonstration, designed to teat Britain's coast defenses, ended early today. Warships and planrs' of a mythical "blue land," 600 miles out in the Atlantic, "attacked" the ports of Southampton, Portsmouth, Ports-mouth, Portland and Plymouth. British forces were mobilized to drive off the "invaders" In a test of the nation's combined land, air and sea strength.
