Except for few stragglers stopping off on their way home, all of the touring teams have completed their barnstorming business, leaving intersectional honors, for the most part, in dispute. dis-pute. A handful of outstanding combinations com-binations stood up through the holiday duelling with unscathed records and must be considered . the nation's leaders at this time. Sectional Leaders ' In the east this group includes Villanova with 10 victories, New York university with seven, . Temple with six and Duquesne with five. In the midwest Iowa alone of the Big Ten is unbeaten with six successes, and Toledo' tops the independents with eight. Iowa State has stepped out in front of the Big Seven with seven straight nonconference conquests. Richmond is leading the Southern South-ern conference hopefuls -with five. But in the southwest, the JWky mountains and on the Pacific Pa-cific coast there isn't a major combination that hasn't been beaten. In addition to this select society, so-ciety, Long Island. Indiana, Pur-clue. Pur-clue. DePaul, North Carolina, Florida. Tennessee, Colorado State, Arkansas, Stanford and Oregon State are topnotch teams that have been beaten only once. This week's packed program will have a tempestuous opening tonight, with Temple facing Michigan State, the combination that ended Long Island's string of nine consecutive victories Sat-urady Sat-urady night with 31-26 upset. . Tuesday Clashes Rice and Texas, two top contenders con-tenders for the Southwest conference con-ference championship, will collide col-lide tomorrow night, while Dartmouth Dart-mouth and Harvard, a couple of the biggest noises in the Eastern (Ivy) league, will meet for the first time Friday. These are only nominal high snots in the juicy goings-on, however. Here is a survey by sections: PACIFIC COAST Stanford nd Southern California in the southern division, and Oregon State. Oregon and Washington in the north, are the standouts. Seven games are billed for the week, but none bring together contenders. SOUTHWEST Six games are booked for the week, and the openers, topped by the Texas- Kice fireworks. conceivably might decide the conference championship. Saturday night Rice also will play the Texas Assies, who have just acquired the services of Bill (Jitterbug) Henderson, a six-foot six-inch sophomore flash, and Captain Bill Dawson from the football squad. MIDWEST The Big Ten conference con-ference campaign will open tonight to-night with three games, but Iowa w ill be idle. Illinois, facing Purdue Pur-due tonight and Indiana Saturday Satur-day night, has -an opportunity to take an early hand in settling the season's honors. The Big Six has four conference confer-ence contests on order. Unbeaten Iowa State has another warm-up warm-up tonight against Montana State and then will set out for the championship Saturday against Missouri. Six games are on the program for the Missouri Valley conference, confer-ence, with Creighton and the ."Oklahoma Aggies cofavorites as the race starts. The Aggies have Won seven and lost two, Creighton Creigh-ton six and two. EAST The Ivy league has three games Involving five of its seven members on tap for the week end. Dartmouth's defending de-fending champs have high-scoring Gus Brobcrg back and have " won five out of seven games to date, but the race looks wide open. More action will be need- ed to weed out the independents. Several small schools have strong teams, notably Seton Hall, with a string of 32 straight, eight this season: Washington and Jefferson Jeffer-son riding a crest of five, and Baltimore with eight wins. Almost all the teams will be busy this week, but Alabama has the toughest row meeting Louisiana State, Tulane twice and Tennessee. |
