Show Parka-Clad Children Brave Chill North Winds For Egg Rolling on White House Grounds WASHINGTON, March 25 (UP) Children dressed in leggings, leg-gings, heavy coats and parkas Monday braved a wintry north wind and temperatures reminiscent reminis-cent of Christmas to Indulge in the annual egg-rolling marathon on the broad south lawn of the White House. There were only about 100 ' children and their parents at the big iron gates when the grounds were opened at 9 a. m. The temperature then was 21. At 9:02 a. m. the first egg was tossed on the frozen ground, and only the fact that it was boiled very herd saved it from disaster. Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared ap-peared at the south lawn shortly short-ly before 10 a. m. She was bare- R headed and wore brown riding clothes. She expressed a hope that the viistors had had a pleasant pleas-ant Easter, and said she wss sorry for the children because It was so cold. President Roosevelt was forced to forego his customary appearance appear-ance on the south portico to greet the egg-rollers. He has been suffering from a cold. . |
