Show Tips for Ski Fans ly Eddie Huber, Famous Canadian Ski Instructor. i THE TEMPO TURN I The "tempo turn" Is a rather confusing name for the maneuver which It Is meant to describe. In reality, this la a high speed turn. It Is difficult to understand how the name originated. There la a very definite similarity between the tempo turn and the Christlanla, because no Christlanla can be performed per-formed without speed. Caereet Downhill Fealties) The objective of every ski runner run-ner Is a straight downhill running position in a style which Is the least tiresome. This means with the upper part of the body erect, very little bend at the hips, and knees bent well forward and springy kls parallel and quite close together. Any cramped positions po-sitions should be avoided. On long downhill runs, a variation In running run-ning positions will greatly help to relax the muscles and body and reduce physical strain to a mini- mum. However, any changes In downhill running positions should never Involve any unorthodox style. Furthermore, these positions should evolve into the Christlanla "swing .technique." Skis held at an angle to each other, as In the stem turn and telemark, are dangerous at high speed. Therefore, we must learn to execute the pure Christlanla with skis parallel as "downhill swing" to connect two traverses. This, of course, requires thorough schooling and complete mastery of the skis. Empaaused Verlage The pure Christlanla performed with emphasized vorlage, greatly eliminates skidding, since the body weight is forward. During the course of the turn most of the weight Is being transferred to the outer ski. Gradual turning from the shoulders, resulting In pivoting on the balls of the feet, and combined com-bined with an even "down-up-down" from tha knees, represent the basic movements of this turn. The momentum, combined with the weight forward greatly reduces re-duces muscular effort. ' This "pura parallel" LTirlstlsnl Is In fact the tempo turn, and can be done at higher speeds than the stem Christlanla, or. any other turn. It will undoubtedly be the turn of the future. |
