Show Blue Devils Stop Trojans Once With Fourth Period Stand Howard Jones, coach of ths Trojans, Tro-jans, was almost too weak to talk after the game. He was still in a stupor. But when he came down to earth he managed to say that in all of his 30 years of coaching he had never sat through such a finish and that hs hoped the next 30 years would not bring him a duplicate of it. The Trojan head man has now directed four U. 8. C. teams in rths Ross bowl without a defeat. Jones said that he had seen few finer defensive teams than Duke. Wade, a tough but gracious loaer, i aaid that as long as he lived he I ' would remember the stand his team mate late In the fourth period when ' the Trojans, after recovering a fum-: fum-: ble, had a first down on Duke's 10-l 10-l yard line. In three tries the Trojans ' lost ground and wound up by miss- SSlng a try for field goal. Maybe this stand had a lot to do with Duke's weariness in the last few minutes. The 25th Rose bowl game, savs for those few minutes in ths final period, was a slow and tiresome gems. Neither team could get anywhere. any-where. Duke played strictly for breaks that never came. Its line would bold and then Erio (the Red) , Tipton would thunder a punt down 1 the field. I Tipton was far and away the best 4 bsck on ths field. The big fellow j ran as well or better than anyone y else and his tremendous kicking I I held Southern California at bay un-, un-, til the dying minutes of the game. ' Duke threatened only once and the field goal was ths result. A fine punt return by George McAfee and a 24-yard pass by Tipton put the ball In position for Ruffa to do his kicking. DUKE SO.
