CaL, Jan. 27 UPtTh nation's leading golf professionals pulled up at th last stop oa th California winter tournament trail today and took final practic shots before launching into the third annual an-nual 13000 amateur-pro event staged by Singer Sing Crosby. Play in the 36-hole tournament at the near-by Rancho Santa Fe Golf club begins tomorrow and winds up Sundsy. Fred Corcoran, manager of the Professional Golfers' association tournament bureau, said that virtually virtu-ally every crack pro was here, with th exception of the winner of the first two Crosby tournamsnts, Sam Snead. The West Virginian waa abruptly called home by the illness of his 75-year-old mother. uick Mats oi tmcago, winner of the San Francisco match play and Oakland open, and smiling Jimmy Demaret of Houston, Texas, who won the Los Angeles open, headed th delegation of pros. Ths amateur division Included a host of film celebrities, topped by Crosby, and a picked array of leading lead-ing Pacific coast shotmakers. A year ago Demaret took th lead th first day with a 68, four undsr par. but gave way to a 74 la tha final IS boles as Snead blew In with a 67 and a total score of 139 to win th medal event and $500 first prise. Snead'a 67 stands as th competitive course record. |
