' No one expects imposible things of the police. The city is large in area and the force is comparatively compara-tively email. But it is large enough to rctind up the vagrants and suspicious characters. The Chief, his sergeants, detectives and patrolmen should know where such characters congregate and lodge. They should make wholesale raids,. .If they do crime will soon cease to be epidemic in Salt Lake City. The public does not want excuses or explanations. explana-tions. It wants action. Results speak for them-, selves. The police are paid for keeping the city free from thugs and burglars. Few of the crimes that are daily recorded in the newspapers are committed by citizens of Salt Lake. THEY ARE THE WORK OF THE TOUGHS THAT DRIFT HERE BECAUSE BE-CAUSE THE TOWN IS KNOWN TO BE "EASY." The action of Judge Diehl in sending two tough characters to jail for 100 days each is praiseworthy. - One was carrying a revolver. The other had a ' piece of toweling, a candle and a cap in his pockets. Everything pointed to the fact that they were holdup hold-up men or cracksmen. There is no sense In being lenient with such men. They have no visible means of support, and the natural na-tural inference is that they are criminals. - NEWS TRAVELS FAST IN THE UNDERWORLD.
