Show WOMAN ASSAULTED; . LYNCHING AVERTED RENO, Nev., Jan. 21. A brutal assault as-sault was made Friday morning upon Mrs. James E. Hooper, a prominent woman wo-man of this place. A negro was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Mrs. Harper and a mob quickly formed to lynch him. . Cooler counsel prevailed, however, and the mob desisted. Feeling ran so high that the negro was taken to the State prison to. Carson for safekeeping. The assault upon Mrs. Harper was made while Mr. Harper was away from home. The assailant entered the house and with an ax struck the woman as she lay in the bed with her two children. chil-dren. He then dragged her body into a woodshed and was preparing to sever sev-er her head from the body when he was frightened away by the children rushing to the house of a neighbor for assistance. When help arrived the man was gone. No motive is known for the assault on Mrs. Harper. Mrs. Harper Is still alive. Her skull is fearfully crushed where she was struck by the ax and she is lying in an unconscious condition. Her husband, who arrived during the day, suspects a Mexican, with whom he has had trou-; ble. and who is said to have threatened hi life. |
