MARRIAGE CEREMONY , IS EXPLAINED IN THE ! EUROPEAN EDITION j ' ' From "Doctrine andl Covenants," published pub-lished in Liverpool, England, 1852, Third European edition: ' j J ' SECTION CIX. j Marriage. ' L According to the custom of all civilized civi-lized nations, marriage is regulated by laws and ceremonies; therefore, we believe be-lieve that all, marriages in this church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints should be solemnized in a public meeting, meet-ing, or feast, prepared for that purpose, and that the solemnization should . be performed by a presiding high priest, bishop, elder, or priest, not even prohibiting pro-hibiting those persons who are desirous to get married of being married by other authority. We believe that It is not right to prohibit members of this church from marrying , out .of the church, if it be their determination so to do, but such persons will be considered consid-ered weak in the faith of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2. Marriage should be celebrated with prayer and thanksgiving; and at the solemnization, the persons to be married mar-ried standing together, the man on the right, and the woman on the left, shall be addressed by the person officiating, as be shall be directed by the Holy Spirit; and if there -be no legal objections, objec-tions, he shall say, calling esch by their names; "You both mutually agree to be each other's companion, husband and wife, observing the legal rights belonging belong-ing to this condition?" And when they have answered "Yea," be shall pronounce pro-nounce them "husband and wife," in the name of Lord Jesus Christ, and by virtue vir-tue of the Jaws Of the' country and authority au-thority vested in him; "May God add hi blessings, and keep you to fulfill your covenants from henceforth and forever. Amen." , . 8. The clerk of every church should keep a record of all marriages solemnized sol-emnized In his branch. 4. All legal contracts oT marriage made before a person is baptized Into this church should be held sacred and fulfilled. Inasmuch as this Church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy, we declare that we believe ' that one man should have one wife; and one woman but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again. It is not, right to persuade a woman to be baptized contrary -to the will of her husband); neither is it lawful to influence her to leave her husband. All children are bound by law to obey their parent; and to influence them to embrace any religious faith, or be baptized, bap-tized, or leave their parents without their consent, is unlawful and unjust. We believe that husbands, parents and masters, who exercise control over their wives, children and servants, and prevent pre-vent them from embracing the truth, will have to answer for that sin. It shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time and through all eternity, and shall be of full force when they are not of the world; and they shall pass) by the angels, and the Gods, . which are set there, to their exaltation and glory In all things, as bath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fullness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever. Then they shall be Gods, because they have no end; therefore they shall be from everlasting to everlasting, because be-cause they continue; then shall they be above all. because all thing are. subject unto them. This promise is yours, also, be-, be-, cause ye are of Abraham, and the promise was made unto Abraham; and by this law are the continuation of the work of my Father, wherein he glorl-fieth glorl-fieth himself. 32. Go ye, therefore, and do the works of Abraham; enter yet into my law, and , ye shall be saved. 33. But If yet enter not into my law, ye cannot receive the promise of my Father, which he made unto Abraham. 34. God commanded Abraham, . and Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham to wife. And why did .she do it? Because this was the law, and from Hagar sprang many people. This, therefore, was fulfilling, ful-filling, among other things, the promises. prom-ises. 25. Was Abraham, therefore, tinder condemnation? Verily, I say unto you, Nay; for I, the Lord, commanded it 3&i Abraham was commanded to offer his son Isaac: nevertheless, it was written, writ-ten, thou shalt not kill. Abraham, however, how-ever, did not refuse, and It wa c-1 counted unto him for righteousness. 37.
