Show A Cii Cx:ni!3 of Law DcHrncj. , When President Joseph F. Smith states that "the people ofTJtah have regarded the situation" in respect of his polygamy "as an existing fact," and, "these people as a rule are broad-minded and liberal in their views, and HAVE CONDONED THE OFFENSE," he Is assuredly not speaking for the people of tkis State. The great majority of our citizens are law-abiding and do not countenance open defiance of the law, and is no respecter of persons In this regard. The Telegram peaking for the Utah public INDIGNANTLY IN-DIGNANTLY REPUDIATES THE ASSERTION OF PRESIDENT SMITH AND DECLARES IT TO BE FALSE. While it Is true that he and his associate violators vio-lators of the statutes have thus far gone unpunished, unpun-ished, it has not been because the people approved of his course, but for REASONS WELL UNDERSTOOD UNDER-STOOD HERE and now to be presented to the Senate Sen-ate as an appeal from citizens of Utah, that SUCH PROSECUTIONS WOULD BE FUTILE. This young State cannot afford to pass by unchallenged un-challenged such a slander 'upon its fair name as that Implied by President Smith's statement The younger generation of all classes and sects are jealous of Utah's reputation. They recognize that at last WE ARE PART OF THE GREAT AMERICAN UNION with brilliant prospects ahead of us. The example of law defiance as set by the head of a most Influential church CANNOT BUT BE PERNICIOUS IN THE EXTREME. If President Smith CAN DEFY THE CRIMINAL CRIMI-NAL STATUTES OF UTAH, why has not any other citizen the right to elect what laws he shall obey and what disobey? |
