Two great waterspouts were witnessed from the deck of the liner Gaelic on March 31st, soon after the vessel left the coast of Japan, both in latitude 84 degrees, 5S minutes north,, longitude 143 degrees, 28 minutes, east. J sea and good weather when the first waterspout waa sighted a mile away, bearing south-southeast , and traveling from east to west at the rate of about Ave knots an hour. Just previous to the disappearance of the waterspout, heavy dark masses of clouds were seen rising to the eastward in the shape of mountains, moun-tains, and a heavy downpour of rain was experienced. Later a fierce squall followed, and the 'waterspout churned the sea up like the propeller of a steamer steam-er and made a noise like that produced by a waterfall. The second waterspout passed within 200 or 300 yards of the Gaelic. ' It was a much larger waterspout water-spout than the first one and made more noise, and churned up the sea with great violence. The( wind at the time was east-south, very strong with a strong rough sea and fierce squalls and rain prevailing at Intervals. |
