Show CALrrORBTA CT.TTYTATB. Its Happy Vapariea Enable It to Salt Iry Human Condition. The climatic conditions of California, when closely considered, upset completely com-pletely all one's preconceived notions of the relation between latitude and temperature. tem-perature. The latitude of San Diego, the southern city of the State, is about that of Charleston, South Carolina, while Los Angeles lies a little farther south than Memphis, Tennessee, The northern line of California is on the same parallel with Boston, Massachusetts. Massachu-setts. From these facts one Is apt to conclude con-clude that although Southern California may nave a sub-tropicai climate, adapted adapt-ed to the growth of citrus fruits, yet the northern part of the State must have the-rigorous winters of the North Atlantic States, or of Iowa or Nebraska Nebras-ka on the upper Mississippi. This la, however, very far from being the case. Four hundred miles north of Los Angeles An-geles and five hundred north of San Diego the summers are warmer and the winters but little more severe than In the cities named. All along the coast the climate is cool during the summer, with considerable low fog near the ocean, which during the day floats up to the summits of the Coast range. This gives an abundance of moisture and an, equable temperature. During the winter win-ter this belt is almost frostless, and the rainfall la, except m the extreme south, from twenty-five to fifty Inches an-, nually. The valley belt, extending six hundred hun-dred miles parallel to the coast. Is quits warm through tha summer with scarce-' ly any rain from May to October. In winter it is colder than on the ooast with much rain. In many of the northern valleys the palm, fig and olive finds a congenial home, while the orange and lemon reach perfection, ripening from four to) six weeks earlier than in the mora! southern countries. I The tourist who Is In search of either health or pleasure can in Call-j forala select his climate at any periodj of tha year. A winter at Monterey with a summer on the Sierras will se- cure a most delightful and healthy climate cli-mate during the entire year. By carefully selecting the location, one can find plenty of land adapted to any .kind of agricultural or hortlcultnr- al pursuit, where with Industry and! economy he can build np a comfortable, self-sustaining home.
