Show Th Ttachtrs. 1 ' The Telegram is glad to welcome the teachers of Utah to Salt Lake. " , The teachers are a great power In this country. They are developing the Americans of tomorrow. The Americans of today owe a large measure of their success to the teachers of their youth. This is a Nation of education. That is the secret se-cret of its progress and growth. Education is free, broad and liberal in the United States and) the men and women who are educating those who wilrbe the great men and women of this Nation iira few years are doing far more than they are credited with in the advancement of the country. It is not due to the colleges that America is such a wonderful Nation and that her people are so well educated. Not that we have ought to say in disparagement dis-paragement of the colleges; they are a factor for, good, but their benefits are obtained by but a handful hand-ful of the eighty millions of people of the United States. The public schools educate those who are doing the bulk of the work who are making Amer ica. - There may be defects in our public Bchool system. sys-tem. They are not serious, however, and time will do much to correct them. In the main the system is excellent and it is constantly improving. 8( much progress is being made by all our institutions that sometimes we fail to notice it, but comparing the schools of today with those of fifteen ,or twenty years ago will show that great Btrides hare been .made. The praise is due to superintendents, principals princi-pals and teachers. . All honor, we say, to those engaged in the educational edu-cational work of this Nation. The teachers are worked hard and, be it set down to the shame of the States, they are underpaid. They get few thanks nnd little money but they are giving the best that is in them bravely and unselfishly. We have often wondered if thetime will come when those in authority will be manly and conscientious consci-entious enough to economize In the expenditures that are lavish because of politics and spend the money thus saved on the schools. It is false economy econ-omy to cheese-pare and save. in paying teachers. Every cent spent on the schools is put into the best investment that can be made. Maybe sometime we will have men in office who will realize this and do justice. f ' " - The work of the teachers is grand, noble. They are molding characters, developing souls. They are paid little more than day laborers in all too many instances and each year more is demanded of them. The Telegram bids welcome to the teachers of Utah. It honors and respect them and it hopes the time may tfome and that speedily that their work will be appreciated and their earnest efforts fittingly rewarded. |
