Deputy sheriffehare gone to Spring1 City to take In custody a man j suspected of being the assailant of Mrs. Gustavo Schwan at Hurray Tues-' Tues-' day morning. i Tho Tnan was placed under arrest Wednesday night by the authorities i ejj Spring City upon information given them by the conductor of an Ore- gon Snort Line train, in which the m an was a passenger. .His hands and face were bad! v -scratched, which attracted the con- ductor's attention and aroused his suspicion, the railroad man having heard of the outrage. The man said he had come from Eureka, which was denied by a Eureka man on the train. - The suspected man was nervous and HI at ease. ; When the train ' stopped at Spring City the conductor notified the authorities and pointed out the man. . i f Ieputy Sheriff Sharp and Marsha 1 Mauss of Murray went to Spring "ily to get the man Thursday morning. - A TIio excitement was not so mark ed in Murray Thursday morning, but .hi feeling of indignation had by no means died down, j j The Austrian arrested on suspicion Wednesday was released from cus-I cus-I tody Thursday, as Mrs. Schwan was unable to. identify him. . Murray is thoroughly aroused, over the - assault -upon Mrs. Gustave Schwan ty an unknown "man Tuesday morning. The excitement at the outset was Intense, In-tense, but, as men whispered to one another an-other the awful details of the crime. It rose to fever heat. When all the facts had gained general circulation Wednesday night, the citizens could scarcely trrasp the horror of the Situation. . Croups of Men Gather. After "the afternoon ehift had finished its day's work and before darkness had set in, groups of from three to twenty men gathered aU street corners, in front "of business houses "and In the postofflce, where they discussed the situation quietly. The feelings of the "citizens had been aroused to a dangerous pitch. There was no loud talking, no haranguing ox crowds from barrel tops or boxes, nothing spectacular. spec-tacular. But the situation was thoroughly discussed. One business man Is said to have advised ad-vised several men In a small group, as follows: Offer-S. to Furnish Rope. "BoV4, if they get the right man, and tberri positive proof that he is the right man, the key of the back door of my store will be found on the door ledge. There's a coll of rope in the store and anyone is welcome to steal it. I'll not 'swear out a burglary complaint." . Other men, equally prominent are said to have expressed themselves as being willing to see summary punishment dealt out by the mob in the event of the capture cap-ture of the fiend. as he lay reading, he dozed Into a half-sleep. half-sleep. A few minutes later, this man heard stealthy footsteps outside. Tried to Enter House. He awaited developments. Soon the trespasser tres-passer made quiet efforts to open the back door, but it was securely locked. Then the prowler went to every window in the house, attempting to open the screens. None could be moved. The oenpant of the house reached under the pillow and pulled out a loaded revolver. Awakening his wife he told her to remain re-main perfectly quiet and not to be frightened. fright-ened. ' Broke Window Catch. Presently an effort to open the bedroom window was begun. The screen was first rut away, then a jimmy was placed under un-der the edge of the window sash and the fastening wap broken. Fired at Marauder. At that instant the man In the room raised up in bed and fired through the window. Unfortunately, his shadow fell on the window, and the prowler dodged away an instant before the ball crashed throuph the pane. Jumping to the floor the man seized a shotgun and opened the window. Man Had Been Away. The peculiar part of this Incident Is the fact that this contractor had been in Idaho for two weeks, and had returned only Saturday night. As he was suffering with a bad cold he saw none of his friends and no one save his wife knew of his return. An hour later the house of William Bishop was visited. The Bishop house is the next but one to the home of the contractor. town, and toward Salt Lake City on foot, guarded by Sharp and two other deputies. depu-ties. When well out of lown the party went to State road and there a deputy sheriff brought the man to the city on the street csr. Two other Austrlans, roommates of the suspect, were taken to the Murray. Jail. Hob Gathers Quickly. A dozen men were standing near the jail and saw the officers approaching with the prisoners. Some one whistled loudly, and almost Instantly the street was crowded with men who came from all directions. Nearly 500 persons crowded the narrow street before the Jtll and demanded to bo Informed as to what charges the officers had against their prisoners. Prisoners Are Frightened. No effort was made to reach the Austrlans, Aus-trlans, who were terribly frightened, although al-though for a few minutes the situation looked critical. Explanation was made that the prisoners prison-ers were not suspected of the crime, but were arrested because they were thought to know of the crime. Then the crowd slowly melted away. The Austrian taken to the county Jail at Salt Lake was arrested at his board-lnp board-lnp shack. He is said to answer In a way the meager mea-ger description given of Mrs. Schwan s assailant. There are several scratches on his hands, but they appear to be old and are nearly healed. The fellow has a thin mustache. The men who talked of lynching talked as if they meant business. There were no 'braggarts in the little groups. Not Drunken Talk. i The men, who In early evening waited In the streets near the jail for some developments, de-velopments, were not drinking. In several Instances intoxicated Americans and foreigners for-eigners were ordered from the streets, not .by the officers of the law. but by citizens who seemed prepared to take the law into 'their own hands. "One home has been Invaded. "Our homes may be in danger. We must protect our fireside from such demons." said a man noted for self-possession and control. Will Punish the Fiend. "To give our homes and our loved onee this protection wo will punish the fiend if he is pro to be the right one." But few women were seen in the streets without escort when the gloom of evening even-ing settled over the town. Those women and girls who were alone hurried as if pursued, and when they turned Into the side streets looked furtively fur-tively behind to see If they were followed. And there was reason for the feeling of apprehension and dread. - For a month past this question has been J secretly whispered about among the women wo-men residents: Prowler Alarms Women. "Who is the man who has been seen prowling about near our homes in the early evening and at night?" Within the last month, and including Monday night, there have been no fewer - than fifteen or twenty families distrubed In the night by some prowler who has attempted at-tempted to enter their homes. In several instances women were alone In the houses, or were thought to be alone. Frightened by Screams. The marauder has been . frightened away In each case by either the shrill screams of the terrified women or by the more forceful and emphatic actions by their husbands.. - -i cr attempts were made to enter as w4-l houses Monday night, presumably by the same man, before he succeeded In uVk,n nl" wa' ,nto tne Schwan house. At 11 o'clock Monday night, a well-known well-known contractor who lives in the house adjoining the Schwan home, retired and extinguished all of the lights In the house Vut one. Tkj3--one was near the bed. and ' ,s ' 4 Between these houses Is the home of the Schwans. Kept Close Watch. These facts Incline many to the belief that the aasailant is a roan who keeps close watch on the goings and comings of the better class of residents of the town, and who suffers from moral perversion per-version or form of monomania. The contractor notified Marshal Mauss Wednesday to Instruct his deputies to eo boldly to his front door and knock loudly if they have business there at night, or they may get shot. Take Wives Out of Town. Many men who are working on night shift, and whose wives are unprotected, have removed their wives from Murray, temporarily, rather than have them stay alone at night and be the prey of nervous terrors, or the possible victims of the fiend. In other cases where the women cannot leave Murray they have formed clubs of two and three, that they may spend the nights together and thus, in numbers, have added protection. There is scarcely an American woman In Murray who has not a revolver and who would not use it if the necessity tat such action arose. Officials Hard at' Work. Sheriff Emery and his deputies, City Marshal Michael Mauss of Murray and his deputies and the Police department detectives are working In harmony in searching for the man who assaulted Mrs. Gustavo Schwan of Murray Tuesday morning. Several private detectives are also ' working Independently on the esse in the hope of winning the reward of $500. Three Suspects Held. A thorough search of the houses In the Aut-trian colony has been made, and three Austrians aro under arrest, and are being held, pending further developments. When the men were taken into custody It was thougnt that !f all of them were taken to the Murray jail, a mob might be organized which would tear the flimsy structure to pieces and lynch all of the men. One of these men, whose name Is Nick Semlanick. and whose American name Is Nick Adamson. "was taken' Into custody by Deputy Sheriff Joo Sharp. Brought to Salt Lake. The suspected man was spirited out of Tells Conflicting Stories. When he was arrested he had no coat on. He said his coat was under the pillow pil-low of his bunk. This proved to be untrue, un-true, as were a dozen other statements that he made. When arrested he was terribly frightened, fright-ened, his face blanched and he trembled in every limb. Semlanlck made several conflicting statements as to hie whereabouts Monday Mon-day night. He said he had gone to bed at 8:0 o'clock, when it was known that he was seen by Deputy Marshal Graham and another an-other man drinking In an Austrian saloon sa-loon a few minutes after 11 o'clock. No Buttons Missing. A coat belonging to the man is said to tally as to the kind of shaterlal, with the one worn by the ravisher. No buttons were missing, nowever. I |
