Show PRESIDENT TAKES t INTEREST IN WEST Conference With Senators and Rep- - resentatives Regarding Land Questions. WASHINGTON. D. C, Feb. 18. An important im-portant conference was held at the White House yesterday between the President and a number of Representatives from Western States. The subject considered was the Quarles bills relating to a repeal of the stone and timber act, the commutation commu-tation clause of the homestead act and the desert land act, all of which are antagonized antago-nized by the Secretary of the Interior, at whose Instance Senator Quarles Introduced Intro-duced the bills for the repeal. Senator Hansbrbugh of the Senate Committee on Public Lands and Chairman Lacey of the House Committee on Public Lands participated par-ticipated in the conference. It Is understood that the President is in sympathy with the efforts of Secretary Hitchcock to prevent alleged frauds attempted at-tempted under the laws referred to, or by their subversion. It was decided at the conference to bend every energy in support of the 'Flynn resolution reso-lution in the House, which provides for the appointment of a commission aa recommended re-commended by the President in his last message, to inquire into and report upon the, operation of the land laws prior to the next session of Congress. It is stated also that the conference decided to abandon aban-don the idea of creating game preserves In forest reservations. |
