Show OLD FLOORS ARE BURNED Courts Suspend Business Because of Shortage of Coal. ST. LOUIS, Feb. 18. While the weather here has moderated, the temperature tem-perature still hovers around zero, the thermometer at 8 a. m. being 1 below. It Is clear, with prospects of warmer weather. Owing to the scarcity of coal at the Four Courts, which contains the Jail, police headquarters, criminal courts, etc., the building was closed today. Not a pound of coal could be found in the engine-room and old floors are being torn up to keep the 250 prisoners In the Jail warm. This fuel will be exhausted by night. - The Jury investigation of the turf Investment In-vestment companies was suspended and the two branches of the Criminal court and the Court of Criminal Correction adjourned for the day. This condition of affairs Is the result of negligence on the part of a contractor who failed to deliver coal already contracted for. Other Institutions of the city are also short of fuel, and an Investigation will be held to ascertain who Is to blame, and compel fulfillment of contracts In the future. , . |
