The west wall and the western half of the Atlas block fell soon after 4 o'clock and caught Chief Devlne and three of his men In the alleyway. al-leyway. The party was pearly buried by the rain of bricks, stone and burning burn-ing wood, but no one was Injured. Chief Devine was struck ore, the helmet by a falling brick and stunned for a mo-.ment, mo-.ment, but quickly recovered. Overcome by Heat. Fireman George Williams entered the building a few moments later and was overcome by heat and smoke, He was . rescued by his comrades and taken to Smith's drug- store, where restoratives were applied. . ' The Ladder Falls. The ladder careened1 a moment, tottered tot-tered and fell. The crowd below sent up a cry of horror and men turned away that they- might not witness the brave man's death. With Stabb strapped to the ladder, he could not leap, to save himself, and it seemed as though in- a moment '. he would be crushed to a' shapeless, quivering quiv-ering mass on the muddy,- pavement. Caught by Wires. , ' ; : But the unexpected happened. - Instead In-stead of falling to the pavement', the long ladder was caught by a cable of electrio wires and Its fall was cut short. Up and down it swayed for a , . few moments, like a giant teeter board, and then stopped as the crowd Bent up a wild" cheer for the plucky fireman. Six men were on a hose line, and were throwing a stream on the building, build-ing, when an .electric wire fell across another. The crossed wires sent out a f flash of light and flame. The firemen, believing that the fire had gained a new foothold, turned the stream on it. The electric current followed the stream to the hose nozzle and sent the firemen flying in-all directions., No one was Injured. " How Hirschvogel Escaped. . G. H. riirschvogel, a traveling representative rep-resentative of a San Francisco hardware hard-ware firm, was asleep In his apartments on the fourth floor when the fire broke out. Mr. Hirschvogel related his experience experi-ence to a Telegram reporter this afternoon. after-noon. He said J . "I was awakened between 2 and 2:30 o'clock by the roaring of the flames' on ! the roof and by a sound as of some one chopping on my door with an ax. "Hearing cries for help I returned and found old Mr. Mahan wandering around bewildered by the smoke and fire. He was unable 'to find his way out. He followed me to the fire escape, and when I saw him safe on the fire escape I went back to Dr. Scott's room. , He had gone and I returned to the fire escape, but was overcome by smoke and fell to the floor by the window.
