Show SICKNESS AND POVERTY : : LEA!) MINER TO SUICIDE Frank Hutchinson qf California Takes Two Ouijccs of Laudanum and ; Dies In His Room. Despondent because of poor health and lack of money. S. Frank Hutchinson, Hutchin-son, a miner 35 years old committed suicide . In room 25 of the American bouse, a rooming-house at No. 51 East Second South street Saturday night by taking two ounces of laudanum. Hutchinson, waa a consumptive in the last stages of the disease and would have died within a few weeks at the most, from natural Causes. This, coupled cou-pled with the fact that he had only 25 cents is believed to be the cause of his despondency. E. E. Bird, who was the acting clerk on Saturday afternoon says that Hutchinson Hutch-inson came In about 2:30 o'clock and was perfectly sober. He said he was sick and went to his bed at once, and was not again en alive. The poison with which he ended his life was purchased recently from the Smith Drug company. On a chair by the bed waa a bottle of blackberry brandy with one or twd swallows gone. It is believed that he washed the poison down with this. A notebook which was found In & pocket contained a number of addresses of Callfornlans. The addresses were in San Diego, Bakersfleld. and White River, and the 'names of Jeff Carver and Mitchell Brothers of White River, of John Minter, Glenville. P. M., care of C. A. Demlng. and of W. A. Simons, 2044 Commercial street. between Broadway and Hill street in San Diego were on the first page of the notebook and had evidently been written recently. It is believed that Hutchinson had been In California to recover his health, and that when he returned to Utah he was unable to go to work and became discouraged. Coroner Clark decided that the case was so plainly one of suicide that he would not hold an inquest. The remains, re-mains, which were taken by S. D. Evans, will be held a few days pending word that may be received from the family of the dead man. |
