Show SHORTAGE IS FOUND IN ST. LOUIS SUB-TREASURY BY EXPERT MOUNTflNTS BT. LOUIS. Oct. 17. Tbree expert accountants from the Treasury department depart-ment at Washington, working under a deputy United States treasurer, counting count-ing more than $20,000,000 in the vaults of the United States sub-treiisury, have discovered a shortage of $C1,200, says the Republican todav. . John E. Wilkie, chief of the United States secret service, is in the city, but declares that his mission has no connec tion with the examination. He mvs he is here merely to attend the Bankers' convention. United States Sub-Treasurer Thomas J. Atkins admitted that the experts are in St. Louis, but said that no definite statement would be made bv him until the representatives from Washington had finished their investigation. "A man's reputation," said Mr. Atkins, At-kins, "is worth more to him than the loss of $61,200 is to the Government. If an error were made in checking money from the vaults to one of the cages, a recount of all the money on hand would reveal the error, and also the presence of the full amount of the monev which should be in the vaults. "The present investigation will determine de-termine whether the accounts balance. Until then nothing can be said, and it would be unjust to ronnect the name of any employee with the discrepancy at this time." t |
