Show . ASSAYEES MEET. An interesting paper on "A Comparison Compari-son of the Wet and Fire Assays of Lead Ore" was'read by D.-J. Kelly at last nio-ht's meeting of the Salt Lake Chapter Chap-ter of the - Western v Association of Chemists and Metallurgists. - e called attention to the shortcomings shortcom-ings and inaccuracies of the dry method, meth-od, especially . when the ores under treatment are complex in composition. ' Although it. has been the pppular method for vears, he said, it -had not yet; been reduced to an exact science, whereas by the wet process the amount of lead. contained in the ore could be determined with accuracy. .But the latter lat-ter process, he declared, requires a greater -amount of skill and experience on-the part of the assaver. . - Mr.-Kelly gave a technical review of the most successful . processes used by expert assavers. ( During the succeeding discussion of this paper many , of the members emphasized em-phasized the desirability of calling the attention of both the ore producers and smelter companies to the advantages of the wet assay. , J. M. .Callow discussed screen. sizing as compared with water classification, in which he set forth the advantages of the former in cheapness, durability and quality of work, and told of, the extent to which it is being adopted. The local chapter has been in existence ex-istence only since last May, and much good has resulted from the work which it has accomplished. It . now has a membership of thirty-two of the leading lead-ing chemists and -metallurgists of the. State. Monthly meetings are held. It was decided to send, a formal request re-quest to the national organization, asking ask-ing that its next meeting be held in Salt Lake City during the latter part of December. As it had been previously ascertained that the officers of the societv consider this aa being the jn-oper place for the meeting, the invitation will doubtless be accepted, and many of the country's most noted chemists and men of science will take this opportunity of visiting Salt Lake and take part in the ' program. |
