Show ARE BETTER SINGERS THAN BALL PLAYERS The 8tewart Opera company, now playing at ythe Salt Lake Theater, can give a good show, but it can't play baseball with tbe'Z. C. M. I., as shown in the game played on Walker's field Friday, which resulted in a victory for the merchants. Tbe final score of 12 to 2 shows the comparative strength of the two teams. The actors accredit their defeat to the better playing of their opponents and an off day for them. Their wizard of a pitcher, W. G. Stewart, leading baritone, had' a sore finger. lie, how-I how-I ever, held down the first sack for one so badly handicapped in a creditable war. Tbe merchants led in tbe scoring from the first. In the fifth, however, the actors were able to gain and lead by a few points. But this only lasted until the storekeepers returned to the bat and the ball new out of sight. A new ball bad to be procured for each batter, so bard did they pound it. Many of the feminine members of tbe troupe were present, bat desnite their waving of colors and yells of admiration admira-tion for the good plays, they chuld not bring vietorv to their team. Manager Alexander of Ahe show aeted as ticket agent and encountered much difficulty in dividing the purse equally between the grounds management ana the two teams. Ten tickets were sold, amounting amount-ing to $2.50. |
