Show CHILD WIFE OF MAN OF 80 GIV2N DIVORCE NEW YORK, Sept. 28. Justice Jaycox. at Tatchogue, L. I., has granted a divorce in the rase of "Rotamuud B. Downs against Nathan A. Downs. The contrasting ages of the couple cou-ple made the case remarkable. The plaintiff claimed she waa under the legal age when ahe married the defendant, then a widower of more than eighty years, living at Riverhead. Mrs. Downs testified that she married the aged man on March 21, lBOo, without the consent of her adopted father. The latter also al-so testified to the same fact and further said he had not since agreed to the marriage. Mrs. Downs was 17 years old last August. No defense was entered by Mr. Downs. Although it had previously been published that the differences of the couple had been settled by the payment of 910,000 by Mr. Downs to his wife, it is said by one close to Mr. Downa that he gave her an even $1000 in settlement. |
