Show ART TREASURES SOLD fOR THE RELIEF FUND ' The auction sale of Japanese art treasures for the benefit of the California Cali-fornia sufferers was held at noon today in front of the National Bank of the Republic. The bidding was lively on most of the articles, although there were few buyers among; the two or three hundred spectators, and a neat sum was realized on sale, half of which will be given to the Cltisens California relief committee. Following is a list of the articles sold, with name of buyer and price paid: ' Satsuma vase, the largest piece . of Satsuma in America, was sold to L. F. Block for $82.50. The bronxe vase, a work of pure Sen-toku Sen-toku bronse and gold, brought $75. G. 8. Holmes was the buyer. The teakwood chair, one of the most handsomely carved pieces of furniture In America, was purchased by A. M. Goshen for $90. The klmona, red satin, embroidered with pure gold thread, valued at $175, brought $40, from G. 8. Holmes. The screen, which was valued at $2500 and said to be one of the most artistic and highest priced pieces of work of the kind in the world, was started off by a bid of $50. From that figure the price went rapidly to $340. the price paid for It by W. C. Alexander. A large silver cloisonne vase brought $45, and three teakwood tabourettes brought, respectively, $15, $1$ and $21. . The amount realized on : the sale reaches a total of $721.50. The Japanese Art Treasures company gat one-half of this amount and the other half will be devoted to relief of San Francisco sufferers. |
