I I CHILD BEHAVIOR Year Old Is Easily Shattered By Frances L. L Jig MD M.D. and Louise Bates Ames PhD I Oh dear what have I done now groaned year old Robby's Robby's Robby's Rob- Rob I bys by's mother to herself I III haven't done anything really since I came into the house except say Hello tHello Robby I What can be the matter with I the poor child now For Robbie had been given of late to unexpected outbursts outbursts outbursts out out- bursts of crying It seemed strange and vaguely alarming in such a n big boy And so often he seemed to cry for apparently apparent apparent- I I ly Iy no reason at all i. i Sometimes though if she worked hard she could discover discover discover dis dis- dis- dis cover what set him off and so today she tried by tactful questioning to discover what if anything she had done to bring on the present burst of tears She did find out But this time it was not something she had done but oddly enough something she Robbie it seems had spent much of the afternoon raking up the front lawn as as a sur sur- prise And he had planned in his mind that when his mother came home she would exclaim How wonderful the lawn looks Who Vho could have done this marvelous raking job And he hung around for some time after the actual raking raking raking rak rak- ing was completed waiting for this or some similar praise Bitter Disappointment But mother alas had arrived arrived arrived ar ar- ar- ar rived home lat late her arms full of packages and her mind on anything but the front lawn She had neither noticed nor mentioned her her- herson's sons son's splendid achievement Of course any person of any age can be disappointed when his good deeds go unnoticed and But the year old mind especially because because because be be- cause in his wish for an exciting exciting exciting ex ex- ex- ex citing satisfying relationship with his mother he often plans out in advance what she will say and do cIo And then he heis heis heis is bitterly disappointed often to the point of tears if she does not play out this little drama in the way he has hils planned it
