| Show o We Can Hope for a Good Year in 1952 Another year ear passes into the history books another new one begins And how do we look upon the change For better Are we glad the old year is over and that we can start anew the search for satisfactions joys jos and triumphs with a clean slate It is customary to hail both the beginning of a new year and the passing of the old The new carries in with it promise promise because because it is unknown The Theold Theold Theold old carries out with it despair and shattered shattered shattered shat shat- dreams dreams because because its record is made It is easy to say good riddance to 1951 There were some bad things about it heavy it-heavy heavy fighting and many casualties in Korea higher taxes here at home scandals in government and in sports trouble in Iran and Egypt and floods and disasters in America But there were some good things too loo We Ve have gained in the exposure of oC communism We Ve have uncovered evil ups tie between gambling crime and politics We have made important progress in the field of atomic energy We Ve have seen the socialist experiment in Britain repudiated even though by far too small a margin The most important accomplishment of oC the past year was the increase in our our r strength in the struggle with communism communism in the world Twelve months ago we looked ahead to 1951 as a year toward which hardly anyone anone could look forward with optimism It was we said in an editorial last New Years Year's day a year which might hold for us trials and tribulations the like of oC which this country has never seen It i is easy to sec see why 1951 was approached with real concern Communist Communist fist China had just thrown her hordes into the Korean war and sent U. U N. N forces reeling in a headlong retreat It looked as if we might have to pull out of Korea entirely or get involved in an unending war with Red Chinas China's masses With much of our strength pinned down downin in the Far East and with western Europe almost defenseless it seemed that the way was open for easy Russian conquest of Europe No wonder we were ere perturbed No wonder the appeal was that we face the new year of 1951 with boldness and courage not with fear and trembling frembling- or even with hope Well VeIl we did face it boldly and i courageously b And it turned out far farI I f better beller than it might have On every I front where we face communism today we are stronger than we were a year ago We Ve have not of oC course won the battle We Ve are still fighting in Korea We Ve have Communist threats in Malaya and Burma and Iran We Ve have not solved the problems of Austria or Berlin But we have made progress progress great great progress progress progress-in in meeting the Communist I menace In that respect the past year was not at all a bad year If the coming year isas is isas isas as good it may well be said next New Years Year's Day that we have met and countered the menace We Ve think it is not being unduly optimistic to hope that will be true We Ve can hope too that some time during the year there will be agreement on the I Korean armistice Not a settlement settlement for for that might take years But an armistice II an an end to bloodshed We Ve can hope that 1952 will not see I any further increase in federal taxation and that arms spending can be kept within the capacity of the American economy to stand We Ve can hope that there will be a cleanup in the Washington Washing Washing- ton Augean stables stables regardless regardless of who i wins next falls fall's election We Ve can hope in other words that 1952 will be a good year in many ways a a year of continued peace prosperity and progress May it be such a year for America and therefore a happy happ new year ear for you ou I |
