Show JACK STRAWS By Jack Schroeder m. m t. t Jack Curtice Curtice-a a Disappointed Man Manc We c caught up with affable aCC Jack GUI Curtice lice in a Boise hotel lobby following the Utes' Utes defeat by Idaho and he was a sorel sorely disappointed man Curtice wanted to win more than anything It was his debut at al the Ute helm of oC the Utah Redskins ins and a victory would have ha been quite remarkable for COI the new Ute Ule mentor As It itS was S though he won wan a lot of oC friends and influenced a lot oC of people with Utah's dramatic second half comeback against the Vandals Actually it would have ha been hi highly improbable for Utah to beat Idaho The Vandals were too big too heavy heay and had too much all around power for a 1 team such as the Utes to counteract The Vandal blockers opened huge holes in the Utah line that anybody could have ha run through during during- the first half 0 A Most Remarkable Thing Here was as the thing though Utah almost I beat Idaho And there were many who conceded they had no business coming coming- comings as s close as M they did This is a tribute to Curtice's Curtice's Curtice's Cur Cur- tices tice's ability to louse a team to its iL greatest heights Most ost of oC the fans present agreed that Utah played over its head Whether this is true or not can be told only In the remaining games And there are arc no breathers on the schedule that lies ahead There were several se things that evolved c from the game that are arc interesting to evaluate evaluate eval eval- 1 Utah will attempt to out- out core its opposition this sea sea- son From general observation tion tion the Utes ha have c only a slim hope of holding holding- down the score of oC their opponents There isn't enough d defensive c fen s i c strength th to allow for such 2 The Redskins need defensive defensive de df de- de e replacements which they haven't ha got g The squad is so small that to dig deeper Curtice would have hae ha e to look to his freshman squad The front liners arc okeh ol-ceh as far as they go but in modern day football its it's Infeasible Co for I the same contingent ent to play both off of- of f fen c n s i v e c 1 I y and defensively el throughout hout an entire game 3 o. o Utah has a pretty good backfield B Bob o b Matthews played a terrific game and Da Dave e Cunningham threw some I mighty fine Cinc passes In addition addi addi- tion Don Lowell Earl Eail George Bean and Kay Bernson ran lan the thc ball well 1 Curtice made ample use of oC several sc sophomores In some instances he had to use the Some looked good g P Particularly a l' l tic u 1 a r 1 y Bob Boh Palmer at tackle Don Kalicki at defensive end Jim Dublinski Dublin- Dublin ski who played a great game at center after replacing the injured Wes Ves Gardner Kay who carried the ballwell ball ballwell ballwell well when he was as in the game Ray flay a big bib tackle who had moments of oC brilliance bril bril- liance Curtice was disappointed despite all the deficiencies present pres pres- ent on his squad But all the Utah fans that witnessed the battle agreed that he did a magnificent job in rousing the staggering stag Utes following their feeble half first performance Biggest Worry Is the Center Problem The biggest big worry lacing Curtice at the present time is the center problem where the mighty es Gardner was sidelined after suffering a torn ligament in his right light knee just before the first fust half ended Gardner will be lost from the Utes for at least a month Its It's a heart heart-breal heart breaking ng thing to happen to such a great athlete as Gardner Wes Ves experienced the same difficulty in the second game of oC the season last year He was sidelined for just about the entire season Weve We've never ne met a football player who performs with greater intensity or desire than Gardner He Hc did just that last Satur Satur- day He racked up tackle after tackle from his line backing spot and the Vandals were quite content to run another direction than his When Gardner started out in his sophomore year he was so good that a lot of oC observers were already tagging tagging- him for all all- America honors But the injury to his Ins leg stopped him in 1949 1919 And that old injury jinx is still with withes Wes es But maybe this year cal it wont won't last quite as long At least everyone hopes it heals quickly I |
