Show COUNTY OPPOSES STATE ROAD MISSING CITIES The Utah county and Provo city commissions joined forces Saturday Satur-day to start the first open, organized orga-nized opposition to the mysterious "super-highway" which the state road commission is believed to be contemplating for somewhere ' through the west part of Utah valley. val-ley. Such a highway, members said, -would at present be of little or no benefit to residents of Utah county coun-ty who are considerably more in need of having thir present highway high-way improved instead of a new road which would by-pass virtually virtual-ly every city in the county. At a meeting last Friday afternoon, after-noon, between members of the two commissions, plus representatives from the Provo Chamber of commerce com-merce and three Vineyard farmers who own land where the state road commission is running surveys, sur-veys, the group voted to oppose the proposed new road until the present U. S. 91 is improved into a four-iane highway for the entire length of Utah county. A meeting was set for 3 p. m., this coming Friday in the county commission chambers, at which i mayors of every Utah county, town, community road committees and others interested will be invited, in-vited, for a thorough discussion of the matter. - Charging the state road commission com-mission with being "evasive" in relation vto the proposed new road, members present said no one locally loc-ally has been able to secure any information on it except through rumor and back-door sources, plus the f aot that surveys have ibeen run through the Vineyard area. All of the information available, however, leads to the belief that it is being planned to run somewhere some-where along the west' side of Utah valley and by-pass all or most of the cities in Utaih county. The proposed highway is supposed sup-posed to be of the "express," or "limited-access" type, similar to famous eastern turnpikes, where high eross-country speeds would be permitted and motorists could get on to it only at certain relatively rela-tively far apart points. Those opposing it locally say the road has the active backing of long-distance truck firms, to which it would be a great advantage. The proposal , was condemned as being something which would only take tourist trade ' directly and swiftly through the state and county, coun-ty, discouraging any inclination to stop and spend tourist money with local business men and agencies. |
