Show Official Comments On Polio Cases; Advises Parents The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reported that the national polio rate is 35 per cent ahead of a year ago. The foundation said 1948 was the worst polio year on record, with 27,850 cases. A total of 4,895 cases have been reported through July 16 this year, the foundation said. On that date last year, there had been 3,601 cases. For the week of July 10, to 16, 1,016 cases were reported as compared com-pared with 716 for the corresponding corre-sponding week in 1948. Dr. Hart E. Van Riper, medical medi-cal director of the foundation, offered this advice to the public: "Above all, parents should watch for symtoms of polio. No symptom of illness should be overlooked since the symptoms of polio are much like those of other oth-er illness a sore throat, head cold, slight fever, soreness in the arm or leg muscles, a stiffness in the neck or back. No symptom is too trivial to have it looked into." Van Riper said precautions should be taken to keep clean, avoid over exertion, stay out of crowds as much as possible and to stay out of water not known to be clean. |
