Show ELK CONDITION IN GREEN LAKES AREA INVESTIGATED To determine- the cause of the poor reproduction of the elk herds in the Green Lakes area (Uinta and Daggett counties) sportsmen there have requested the fish and game department to issue permits for five bulls and five cows. It is thought that reproduction may be due to disease or blood conditions of the herd. George Reid, assistant director in charge of law enforcement, who recently returned from an inspection inspec-tion trip of this area, reported that while the herd has shown some increase in-crease in the past and is now estimated esti-mated to be between 300 and 500 head, it has not made the progress expected over a long period of time. He said that the area was the most ideal in the state from a herd development standpoint. Feed is plentiful and the country in general is ideal for elk herds. Elk were moved from the Nebo herd the most prolific and healthy herd in the state and transplanted transplant-ed in the area last fall in an effort ef-fort to improve herd conditions. Area sportsmen there pointed out that if 10 elk could be taken this fall and tests made, it might be determined if something were wrong with that particular herd to cause its lack of propagation. If it were found to be the bulls, a special spe-cial hunt could be instituted for bulls and the number taken could then be replaced by the healthier bulls from the Nebo herd. |
