Show SOLDIERS GAIN IN THE U. S. ARMY The average American soldier, when he enters service, is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 144 pounds, has a chest measure of 33 inches, a 31-inch waistline, wears a shoe and a size 7 hat, according to figures released by the war department depart-ment based on records of the quartermaster quar-termaster corps. After a few months in the army, however, the recruit has gained "In weight on army food, wears shoes one-half size larger and has an expanded ex-panded chest measurement. Statisticians Statis-ticians in the office of Colonel P. J. Riley, quartermaster supply officer offi-cer at the San Francisco general depot, Fort Mason, Calif., have worked out figures showing the predominant size American soldier sol-dier now on duty in the Ninth corps area, Hawaii, the Philippines, Alaska and Panama. He wears an 8-E shoe, a size 11 sock, his shorts are size 32 and his undershirt size 36. His trousers are 30 inches at the waist and 31 inches long. We wears a size 15 shirt, 33-inch sleeve length. He wears a 38 regular coat, 38 overcoat, over-coat, a size 9 glove and a size 7 hat. To keep this soldier in fighting trim his first year the quartermaster quartermas-ter corps spends $404.65, of which $175.20 is for his food, $162.05 for clothing, $15.79 for individual equipment, and $51.61 for barracks equipment. Weapons, ammunition, pay and other expenses incurred during his service are not included in these figures. |
