Show Missionary, Speaks In Illinois Enroute- Home The following note of interest concerning Tommy Oakes, son of Mrs. Mary M. O-akes of Salt Lake City, formerly of Springville, appeared ap-peared recently in the Jacksonville, Illinois Journal: "A description of Scandinavian countries, illustrated with pictures in color, will be presented- at the Bluffs Methodist church Monday at 7:30 p.m. The speaker will be Tom Oakes, 24, who left his home at. Salt Lake City, Utah, to spend two and a half years in Finland as a missionary for the Church of the Latter Day Saints. "He is in Bluffs as the guest of his father's cousin, Royal Oakes, and other relatives. The entire community is invited to hear his address Monday evening. There will be no charge. "The young man, his mother, Mrs. Mary Oakes of Salt Lake City, and his aunt, Miss Grace Oakes of Michigan City, Ind., are all visitors here. "Tom Oakes was one of six missionaries mis-sionaries sent to Finland. v They learned the language there and as a consequence were asked to act as interpreters for contestants at the Olympic games. Oakes took many of his pictures at the games, photographed photo-graphed more scenes when he visit, ed Sweden ,and several other Euro- pean countries. "The visitors will leave here Tuesday and Oakes will return to Salt Lake City to complete his education at the university there. He was a guest at Bluffs four years ago. His mother has not visited' here for 19 years. "The three guests attended a shrimp fry held Thursday evening by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Oakes and family on the back lawn of their home. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Royal Oakes, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oakes and family, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Castle and son, Oakley. |
