Students with speech difficulties were screened at the four elementary elemen-tary schools, and also junior and senior high schools by the local public health nurse, Mrs. Leona Curtis, in cooperation with the teachers, who reported the stu- y dents in need of help. Examinations Examina-tions were made to see how many would be benefited. At the clinic in Spanish Fork, 68 students from the district were interviewed with their parents by Dr. Alonzo Morley and Mr. Jex from Brigham Young university speech department, assisted by university students who are majoring major-ing in speech correction. It was found that only five out of the 68 had defects serious enough to require clinical help, and for these arrangements were made to attend summer correction correc-tion classes at BYU. The other students could al be helped by parents and teachers. Professors Morley and Jex took time with each individual child and "'his parents, explaining the proper formation of words, and all posible ways to assist the child in attaining clear speech. Interested Inter-ested teachers were then given the same instruction. All parents present also saw slides and films which illustrated all types of speech difficulties and practical methods in correcting them. Mrs. Curtis reported that the clinic was well conducted and helpful, and that all who took advantage of it were benefited. |
