Show Hales Expounds Uqh Theory of Weather Forecast Principals that have revolutionized revolu-tionized weather forecasting will be introduced at Brigham Young university. They were studied by Dr. Wayne B. Hales, "Y" meteorologist, mete-orologist, during the past three months at the California Insti- tute of Technology, Pasadena. j The basis of the newsystem is the Norwegian "poiar front" theory, Dr. Hales said. Comparative Compara-tive isolation during the world war compelled Norwegian scientists scien-tists to work out a new method of forecasting to protect their fisheries. "All weather changes are due to intersections of two great masses of air, each having characteristics char-acteristics which make it different differ-ent from the other in temperature tempera-ture and humidity," Dr. Hales explained. "One mass originating in the polar regions is cold, dry, and heavy. The other, originating in the tropics, is warm, moist, and relatively light. "As these two masses surge back and forth, giant waves appear ap-pear along their inter-face, or surface where they meet. These waves move rapidly along this surface, bringing , various types of weather." Dr. Irving P. Krick, using the new method has achieved 99 per cent accuracy in forecasting for short periods, at the California Cali-fornia Institute of Technoogy. His forecasts are widely used by motion mo-tion picture . studios, for whom he has saved large sums of money. Dr. Hales will teach photography, photogra-phy, astronomy, and physics in the spring quarter, which began Monday. He will also resume his duties as chairman of the student accommodations committee. He returned Friday with Mrs. Hales, who spent two weeks with him in California. |
