Show RECEPTION FOR PIONEER HELD AT MAPLETON In honor of Mrs. Eliza R. Tew Mendenhall, oldest woman residing- at Mapleton, whose eightieth eigh-tieth birthday occurred Thursday, her children entertained at an informal reception at the Maple-ton Maple-ton school auditorium, in the evening. Approximately 125 relatives rela-tives and close friends attended. A banquet and program were features of the entertainment at which, a son. Harvey Mendenhall, acted as master of ceremonies. Program numbers were given by descendants of the honored guest. Music consisted of selections by Mrs. Aaron Mendenhall, Earl Tuckett and Max Mendenhall. Dance solos and children's activities activi-ties added an interesting phase to the social. Historic sketches of the settlement and growth of Mapleton given by Willis K. Johnson, second oldes Springville resident, R. L. Mendenhall of Mapleton and T. T. Mendenhall of Alberta, Canada, were especially especi-ally enjoyed. Mrs. Mendenhall, a daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Tew, was born in the old fort in Springville,. Spring-ville,. March 23, 1857. She spent her early girlhood in this community com-munity with the exception of three years with her parents at Bear Lake and Paris, Idaho. Her parents are said to be the first English emigrants to make permanent per-manent residence in Springville. As a young girl she learned to spin and do many other house-1 house-1 hold tasks required in the early days. She became very adept in the art of stocking knitting, 1 soap and candle making. , She was married to John Men- j denhall April 24, 1879, in the old Salt Lake endowment house,! the ceremony being performed j by President Daniel H. Wells, j She made her home at Maple-! ton since 1885, and at present maintains her own home and takes a keen interest, in affairs of her family and the community in which she lives. She is the mother of eleven children, nine of whom are living, liv-ing, and were present at the birthday celebration, as follows: Mrs. John Tuckett, Salem; J.W. Mendenhall, Cedar Cily; T. T. Mendenhall, Raymond, Alberta, Canada; Joseph Mendenhall, of Huntington ; Byron Mendenhall, Payson; Mrs. Arthur F. Berry, Rexburg, Idaho; Aaron and .Harvey .Har-vey Mendenhall, Mapleton; Barney Bar-ney Mendenhall, Salt Lake City. She has 60 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, many of whom also attended the birthday |
