H, J. SMITH SERVICES HELD Herbert James Smith, highly respected and well known resident of this city, who for the past 53 years has worked for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tompany, died of heart disease Sunday, at a Salt Lake City hospital. hos-pital. Largely attended and impressive funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, in the Third ward chapel. Burial was in the City cemetery under the direction ; of Claudin Funeral home. : Mr. Smith was born August 5, .' 18G7, at Bicester, Oxfordshire, ; England. As a boy of seven years, he came to this country with his father, his. mother having died two years before. They resided in Pittsburgh Pitts-burgh until 1881, when they came to Utah. For a time he lived, in Salt Lake City moving to Springville Spring-ville in 1900. He married Susan Bean December 24, 1891. Mrs. Smith died here, in 1924. Mr. Smith went to work for the D. & R. G. railroad when he was seventeen years old. He soon advanced ad-vanced to fireman and then to engineer in which capacity he worked until January 8, 1937. He was a member of the Brotherhood Broth-erhood of Locomotive Engineers, division No. 713, and a member of the Independent Order of Odd, Fellows, lodge No. 14. He is survived by six sons and daughters, one son, Raymond J. Smith having preceded him in death one year and eight months. His children are: Herbert W. Smith, Ogden; Claude A. Smith, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Earl Wing, S. Thomas, Meatrice A., and Frederick Fred-erick H. Smith of Springville. There are also 13 grandchildren and two sisters, Edith A. Smith and Beatrice H. Smith of Salt Lake City; a half brother, Lynn-ville Lynn-ville M. Smith, Helper; two half sisters. Myrtle Kimbrough and Ethel Irene Smith, and a stepmother, step-mother, Mrs. Marguerite Bonham Smith, Salt Lake City.
