Show SPRiNGVILLE CENTENARIAN PASSES AVAY Moroni Miner, 100, Oldest Utah County Resident Resi-dent Succumbs ' SPRINGVILLE On the eve of his scheduled appearance appear-ance as a speaker at the Black Hawk encampmen; at Nephi, Moroni Miner, 100, the oldest resident of Utah county, and a pioneer educator and civic worker, died shortly before noon Wednesday. The centenarian Black Hawk war veteran died at his farm home on South Main street, where he has lived for 70 years, and where he and Nancy E. Chase Miner were man and wife together for 67 years and reared 12 sons and 3 daughters. Mr. Miner had planned until three days ago to attend the Black Hawk en- campment and was expected to be a speaker speak-er tonight as a feature ol the Spnng-ville Spnng-ville program. Ailments incident inci-dent to old age cut off his life after a brief illness. Acquainted with Joseph Smith, founder found-er and first prophet of the L.D.S. church, Mr. Miner came to Utah in 1851 with h i s widowed mother and seven brothers and sisters. Moroni Miner After living for a few months at a settlement on the Jordan river, Mr. Miner moved to Spring-ville Spring-ville in 1851. During his early life he was active in building the L. D. S. church and in civic projects. pro-jects. He assisted in the construction construc-tion of the first meeting house at Springville, and in building the first irrigation ditch in this region. As an L. D. S. missionary he served two years in the southern states, and after a long career in the church resigned from active work in the high priests' quorum in 1915, at the age of 80. He was among the first to devise de-vise plans to educate the pioneer children, one room of his home being used as a school. Surviving are nine sons and daughters : Bert, Floyd, M. S: and Paul Miner, and Mrs. Elizabeth Eliza-beth Whitmore, Springville; Austin Aus-tin Miner, Provo; George Miner, San Francisco ; Mrs. Ruth Ben-nion, Ben-nion, Vernal; Thorn Miner, Philadelphia; Phila-delphia; 33 grandchildren; 37 great - grandchildren; 37 great-great-grandchild. |
