Show Codling Moth, Crickets Seen As Crop Threat Warnings concerning the codling cod-ling moth and the Mormon cricket were issued to Utah county by the county agricultural agent's office today. Second brood codling moths are still flying and at least one more cover spray will be required to deal with them, according to Assistant As-sistant Agent Clarence D. Ashton. Mormon crickets have appeared in the county. They do not threaten threat-en trouble this year but may do so next year unless vigilance is exercises in all parts of Utah valley. Checking over the traps for moths in 13 orchards in various parts of the valley, Mr. Ashton found Monday that the second brood is numerous. He urged that apples and pears be sprayed not later than 12 days following the application of' the last cover. He stressed thoroughness, especially in the case of apples, because the fruit is now becoming large and there is danger of leaving one side unsprayed. The Mormon cricket threat has raised its head in the southwest part of the county. James Foster, in Eureka canyon, found crickets in his dooryard recently, for the first time in 20 years. Just over the ridge in Juab county two swarms of considerable size have been making trouble. They are moving in the general direction of the Utah county line. The county coun-ty agent's office had word that crickets have appeared on the west side of Utah lake but investigation investi-gation revealed none there as yet. If weather conditions are right next year, however, there is a possibility that the insects will invade this hitherto favored region, re-gion, Mr. Ashton said. He urged anyone who observed signs of crickets to report to the agent's office immediately. "If we can get them in time we can do much to curb them," he said. Traps to catch codling moths for purposes of checking on prevalence of the insects at various vari-ous times of the season have been placed in the orchards of Heber Liechty, Provo east bench; Stanley Patten, east bench; R. G. Ercan-brack, Ercan-brack, near Rock canyon; Stanley Roberts, Provo bottoms ; A. Ray Ekins, north Provo; Ralph Meld-rura, Meld-rura, river bottoms; D. M. C. Spaulding, northeast bench; O. M. Crandall, mouth of Provo canyon; John Fowers, Orem west bench; Julian Hansen, central Orem; George Sawyer, mouth of Rock canyon; and Angus Mellor, Pay-son. |
