Show Cubs and Giants In Crucial Series NEW YORK, Aug. 24 U.R The battle for the honor of meeting the New York Yankees in the world series opens today between the Chicago Cubs and the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds. From the way the Cute and Giants have been getting hurt, neither club seemed anxious to face the Yanks on the firing line. The Giants have four cripples. Dick Bartell has a bad ankle, Sam Leslie a sprained wrist, Dick Coffmah a spiked leg and Gus Mancuso a broken finger. The Cubs casualties are Rip Collins, broken leg, Joe Marty, injured knee and Augie Galan, injured leg. Rival pitchers for today's game will be Carl Hubbcll, Giants' screwballer, and Bill Lee, Cubs' right-hander. The Cut's have pounded Hubbell out of the box the last two times they faced him. Lee has been laid up with a pulled muscle in his side, and has pitched only 4 2-3 innings in the last two weeks. The Cubs have a four-game lead, but the margin is only two games on the important side the lost column. If the Cubs win both games, it'll be all over but the shouting. In 17 games this season the Cubs have beat the Giants 11 times. |
