A tasty luncheon was served by the hostess host-ess tu 20 club members present. The meeting was under the direction di-rection of President Ada Barron Bar-ron and it was decided to take up a course in English as part of the club program this year, with each club member to pur-j pur-j chase a set of hooks for the 1 course. I ! i i Of special interest to their many friends here was the recent marriage of Misa Beth Finch, daughter of William R. and Neva Deal Finch, former residents of tins city, and Spanish Fork .to Morris Q. Mark, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Cowley of Hult Luke City wen; guests during last week at tro home of Mr. Cowley's Cow-ley's daughter, Mrs. Joseph Olsen Hnd family here. Mr. and Mrs. Cowley had just come from Los Angeles, Calif., where they visited Mrs. Samuel P. Cowley and other relatives. They plan to leave Salt Lake City Monday for Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. and there will meet another of Mr. Cowley's daughters, daugh-ters, Mis. Edgar B. Brossaid, wife of U. S4. Commissioner Brossard and with her will spend the winter in England at the Isle of Man, which is Mr. Cowley's birthplace. with Mrs. Mercedes Anderson as hostess. Mrs. Ida Horton of Provo is spending the winter with her mother, Mrs. Frances Peterson in this city. Word was recently received here of the birth of a baby daughter, daugh-ter, to Mr. anil Mrs. Roland Sand-strom Sand-strom of Santa Ana, Calif., Mrs. Sandstrom was formerly Miss Lucille Lu-cille Packard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Packard former Springville Spring-ville residents, and the new baby is Mr. and Mrs. Sandstrom's first child. Miss Antoinette Willey of Salt Lake City spent several days of the past week as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Olsen and family here. Mr. and Mrs. Gern Johnson visited last wees with their son Lynn Johnson who is convalescing from an accident at a Vernal hospital. be entertained Thursday night, October 14, at the home of Mrs. Manilla Brown. Ail members are invited to be present, at 8 o'clock. Miss Louise Clyde entertained a group of friends at her home Friday Fri-day evening, the occasion being her thirteenth birthday. Games and a tasty lunch were enjoyed by all. Phillip P. Tuckett of Bakers-field, Bakers-field, Calif., was in Springville the past week to attend funeral services serv-ices for his mother, Mrs. Lucy E. Tuckett, held- Friday afternoon. Mrs. G. S. Wood, accompanied by Mrs. Daisy Southworth and son Dallin and daughter Pauline, spent Friday with friends in Salt Lake City. An enjoyable weiner roast was held by tne L. V. A. flub recently at Balsom park. Included in the party were: Isabelle Leslie, Janis Clark, Marjorie Clark, Tess Gam-melt, Gam-melt, Bernice Eastman, Gwene-viere Gwene-viere Johnson, Verlaine Beardall. A tasty luncheon featured the occasion with the two mentioned and Ann Stewart, Sarabell Stewart, Mary Bird, Afton Paifreyman, Mabel Simkins, Lucille Packard, Audrey Aud-rey Jensen, Clara Childs, Luell Best and Carrie Tripp present Mrs. Ann' Stewart was elected j president of the club and Mrs I Luciile Packard, reporter, with Mrs. Sarabell Stewart retained ! as secretary. The preceding meeting of the club was held at the home of Mrs. Afton Paifreyman, where a dainty and well arranged luncheon lunch-eon together with cards were enjoyed. Prizes on this occasion were won by Mrs. Louise Brown, member, and Mrs. Billie Burt, a guest. Other guests were: Dona Collins, Florence Allen, and Madelyn Dispain. The next ciub meeting will be October 22, with Mrs. Lucile Packard. Mrs. Maurine Haymond entertained enter-tained at a birthday party for her little son, Jay, Sunday. He was four years old. A variety of entertainment including a fish pond and vari-colored baloons as favors were enjoyed. Refreshments Refresh-ments were served in conclusion to 24 little guests. L. D. S. church, the bride wore a gown of white satin with a j fingertip veil and carried a bou- . quet of white roses. Maxine Mickelson was maid of honor j and Margaret Mack, sister of the bridegroom, flower girl. I "Best man was Johnny Cloes and Verdell Bean and Robert Mack, brother of the bridegroom, ushered. The brde was graduated gradu-ated from the Manu .Arts high scnool and Los Angeles junior i college. Mr. Mack, an alumnus ' of the University of Southern I California, is affiliated with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity." I The newly weds are now residing re-siding in San Bernardino, Calif., where Mr. Mack is mathematics and science instructor at San Bernardino high school. The couple came to Springville and visited the bride's grandmother, Mrs. Nancy ' Deal, and other relatives here and in Spanish Fork and then went to Salt Jjake City where they were married in the temple. Members of the Ladies' Literary club spent a pleasant evening Thursday, at the home of Mrs. I.ela Packard. A nicely arranged and tasty luncheon was served at small tables early in the evening to Hi club members present. Following Fol-lowing luncheon, litllu Miss Gilda Ann Packard gave a song accompanied accom-panied at the piano by her mother, Cal Packard rendered two piano .selections and Miss Betty Boyer also gave a piano number. The lesson of the evening, on better speech, was conducted by Mrs. .lessee Dalton. A biography of Anthony Eden by Mrs, Ruby Clirlstensen was ulso an enjoyable feature of the program. President Elizabeth Salisbury was in charge, and announced the next meeting of the club to be held October 25, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bird accompanied ac-companied Mrs. Polley Day to her home at Elmo and visited there on Thursday and Friday of last week. Mrs. Day has spent the past two months with relatives here and at Salina. Members of the Missionary Society So-ciety of the Community church were entertained last Wednesday afternoon, at the home of Mrs. Vera Perham. T. club will Mr. and Mrs. John H. Whiting Whit-ing spent the week end with their son Mark, who is attending attend-ing the U.S.A.C., at Logan. They also visited another son, Ray Whiting and family who recently recent-ly moved to Ogden to make their home. Mrs. Robert Patterson, formerly for-merly Nadine Reynolds, who came here recently from Wilmington, Wil-mington, Calif., to attend the funeral of her father, Arthur Reynolds, with Mrs. Mabel Brown and Mrs. Iris Jenkins were dinner din-ner guests of Mrs. Martha Whiting Whit-ing at her home in Mapleton last Thursday. A number of friends were en- tertained by Mrs. Naomi Thorn at a bridge luncheon at her home last Wednesday evening. Prizes for the evening's entertainment were won by Mrs. Thelma Clark and Mrs. Leoia Ewing. Others in attendance were Mrs. Helen Haymond and Mrs. Ina Jacob-sen Jacob-sen of Provo; Mrs. Madge Thorn, Mr. Merscedes Anderson, Miss Mary Hadley, Mrs. Lucille Hughes, Hugh-es, Mrs. Lucille- Childs, Mrs. Maurine Haymond and Mrs. Gweneth Thorn. Mrs. Maude Curtis was hostess to a group of friends at a nicely j arranged dinner at Valley Tavern Friday evening. Following the dinner, the guests enjoyed -"500" David Noakes of Logan was a guest at the home of his daughter, daugh-ter, Mrs. Emma Long and family fami-ly on Sunday. Mrs. Maude Roylance and sons Hugh Roylance and Attorney Arnold C. Roylance have spent the past few days visiting their daughter and sister, Mrs. Melba Sehalamani and husband at San Francisco, Calif. ' Brockbank was hostess to the Alpha Beta club members at their regular meeting Friday afternoon. Appearing Ap-pearing on the program were the Misses Virginia and Genevieve Gene-vieve Bird, who rendered, "The Swallow," - and- "By the River St. Marie." The feature of the afternoon was the "Travelogue" "A Trip to the Orient," presented pre-sented by Miss Lola Bradford of Spanish Fork. Miss Bradford snoke interestingly of Japan, China and the Philippine Islands. Supplementing her lecture, she displayed an exhibit of lovely textiles, wood and stone cuts and fine art sketches and prints obtained ob-tained from oriental art galleries. In conclusion, Miss BradforcJ, who left China just two! davs nrior to the beginning- of hostilities hostili-ties of the present Sino-Japanese conflict, answered questions relative rela-tive to international affairs in the Orient, declaring, "Because we "were not permitted to visit. Peiping, the mecca of the American Amer-ican tourist, we turned - our faces homeward, happy above ail else to be an American citizen." 1 Sixteen members and three guests enjoyed the afternoon which was ended with a dainty luncheon. Vaughn Williams, given by Mrs. Mabel Wright, was an enjoyable part of the program. Miss Helen Alle-man, Alle-man, vice-president of the club 1 was in charge. Preceding, the program, dinner was served at one long table with yellow chrysanthemums chry-santhemums forming an attractive attrac-tive centerpiece and place cards corresponding. Covers were laid for Mrs. Wendell Nielson, a guest, Mattie Davis, Minerva Johnson, Ellen W. Sessions, Bertha Ber-tha Bearnson, Melba Sumsion, Eleanor Matley, Lillian Russell, Helen Alieman, Edna Hansen, Fay Bearnson, Prudence Wride, and Rea Straw. Mis. L. E. Otteson will be hostess to members of the Home Culture club at her home Friday Fri-day evening, when Hugh A. Bax-1 Bax-1 ter of the high school faculty, will give a talk on "Controversies in the Orient." All members are urged to be present at 7 o'clock. Members of the Jovaiity club were delightfully entertained last Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Merle Packard. During the games of the evening, prizes were won by Mrs. Mamie Black- - ' ! Mrs. Delia Dallin entertained , members . of the Fidelity club 1 at her home Friday evening. A delicious lunch was served at 8 o'clock to eight club members. ! A Hallowe'en decorative scheme was carried out in tallies, at 1 the tables and in the rooms. Prizes for the evening's games went to Mrs. Ann Johnson and Mrs. Flora Maiben.
