Show CAMPBELL TO TRY FOR MARK NEW YORK, Allj,. 27 ir.i: Sir Malcolm Campbell, holder of the world's land speed record, arrived ar-rived today aboard the liner Majestic, Ma-jestic, and announced he would go immediately to the salt beds near Salt Lake City to attempt to better his own mark of 276.8113 miles per hour. The British speed demon has made five other trips to America in quest of new automobile rec ords. He was successful each time. Campbell said that while he is "always anxious to set a new marl! when I get in Bluebird, this trip is really more in the nature of an experiment than an attempt on the record." "As to reaching the '30' that I 'have been trying for, for so long, jX-am open minded," he said. I "I am not too sanguine. But if I we learn what we think we will the trip will be well worth while. "You must remember one thing," Sir Ma,'colm said. "We will have a percentage against us on the salt beds. You see because of the 4000 foot altiudc we will lose IS per cent of our horsepower, horse-power, but because of the lessened wind resistance we will gain 14 1 per cent." Campbell expected to leave tomorrow to-morrow and has set tentative dates of Sept. 6-7-8 for his initial record trials. He said that Blue-, bird would arrive at Salt Lake City either today or tomorrow and that there would be two or three days of work on her before he can make any record attempt. |
