Show Wasteful Cutting I Of Christmas ! Trees Forbidden The Christmas season is again approaching and with it, the wasteful cutting of Christmas - trees on watersheds that need ; all the protection possible to hold back the water and stop erosion. ; In this locality, Christmas trees j are scarce and inadequate to sup-""; sup-""; ply expected demands. This is - especially true on the mountain lands adjoining Utah Valley. Every year a large number of people go to the mountains and cut trees everywhere, giving no I thought to watershed or other ! forest influences which must be j safeguarded. I The forest service is in sym-I sym-I pathy with the Christmas spirit ) and wishes to do everything possible pos-sible to continue this fine old : custom, but it is impossible to ' allow Christmas trees to be cut from forest lands in Utah coun-;i coun-;i ty. It takes from six to 15 years to grow a Christmas tree on our I mountain lands, and unless the ', wasteful cutting of what few ' trees we have left is stopped, it won't be long until all of our '! evergreens will have been taken. II The forest service is planting I trees every year in order to re-J re-J stock our mountain lands witn '( timber. Therefore, no Christmas lJ trees will be allowed to be taken j from any forest area in Utah i county. Men will patrol canyons l from now until Christmas and anyone found cutting Christmas ,J trees on forest land will be pros-I pros-I ccuted. ' Please cooperate with the forest for-est service in protecting what few trees we have remaining on our watersheds. ' MERRILL NIKLSON, ;j Forest Ranger 1 |
