Show IDAHO FOREST FIRE CHECKED SrOKANB. Wash., Aug. 22 (U.R) Residents of Avery. . Idaho, breathed easier today as the heavy pall of smoke that has hung over the town since last Sunday lifted, and 600 picked fire fighters surrounded sur-rounded the town as protection against menacing flames. The f i re has moved past the town burning all the nearby vegetation vege-tation and unless the wind changes unexpectedly, there is no immediate immedi-ate danger, the chief forecaster said. The blaze flared up near St. Joe river on almost exactly the same spot where a disastrous fire in 1910 claimed the lives of 28 men. A strong wind carried the flames through the heavy underbrush under-brush towards Avery, i Before fighters could be placed on the scene to check it, the blaze had spread over three miles wide and had advanced six miles. The 10,000 acre Pack river fire in the Pend O'Reille forest has been momentarily checked by a large crew of the 18,000 men who are fighting fires in western Montana, Mon-tana, eastern Washington and northern Idaho. |
