Show PURCHASE OF COUNTY LAND SOUGHT HERE Chamber Committee to Meet Saturday Morning On . Forest Project With a view of enlisting the attention of the National Forest Reservation commission commis-sion in the purchase of mountain land in the Provo-Springville Provo-Springville area, to be added to the forest reserves, a meeting of the forest and flood committee of the Provo chamber of commerce has been called for Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, according to announcement of Clayton Jenkins, executive secretary. sec-retary. The National Forest Reservation commission has at its disposal 20 million dollars with which to purchase pur-chase approximately eight million acres of land on which forest activities ac-tivities can be conducted, Mr. Jenkins Jen-kins explains. When that land Is purchased it will not only J)ut into circulation the amount of the original purchase price, but also will provide 176 additional forest camps. It is the view of local chamber of commerce officials that an effort ef-fort should be put forth to procure pro-cure some of this money for the purchase of land on the Wasatch range east of Provo and Springville with a' view of including the same in the Uinta forest, which it already al-ready adjoins. Such a move would safeguard this area against the flood menace which threatens an extended area between Provo and Springville each year, including the Columbia Steel plant and its allied industries. At the present time this area is practically barren as a result of overgrazing, and any violent storms or cloudburst might prove disastrous dis-astrous to these industries and other property, including the Utah state hospital, county infirmary and many homes and property along the state highway. It is pointed out that with these landsi which are not privately owned, under the control of the forestry department, it would not be long until sufficient Vegetation and foliage would be developed to establish a barrier against the flood menace. Dr. Vasco Tanner of Erigham Young university is chairman of the committee and the following members and Springville citizens have been asked to participate on the committee: Swen O. Nielson, I. E. Brockbank, Charles DeMoisy, Jr., H. B. Makin, and Mayor John L. Whiting and Willima Witney of Springville. |
