Show 2 MORE PROVO BOYS ARRESTED i ON CAR THEFTS Eecent car thefts in Provo J were cleared up late Tuesday , with the arrest by Chief of Police Otto Birk and Traffic Officer Lyle Davis of Ted Alexander, 15, and Donald, Smith, 16, both of this city. The boys were arrested by the two Provo officers about three-quarters of a mile south of the Provo canyon road on the state highway at Orem, following an ex-titing ex-titing chase. At the police station Alexander confessed to the taking of a car belonging to D. F. Crandall of Springville, while Smith acknowledged acknowl-edged having taken a car belonging to G. W. Daybell, 158 East Fifth North. Both cars were taken Monday Mon-day night between 8 and 9:30 o'clock while the cars were parked near the Paramount theater. The boys also confessed to having broken brok-en into a car parked at the same place and stolen from it a large supply of candy and gum. This car belonged to John E. Harris, a Ealesman of the Startup Candy company. Alexander . is also said to have confessed to Chief Birk that on the evening of October 15 he took a car parked near the. Paramount theater which belonged to C. Ray Van Leuven of Springville. That car was abandoned two days later on Seventh East street a short distance dist-ance north of Center street. According to the story told by the boys to the police, immediately after aft-er taking the cars Monday evening they drove to Raymond park in the northeast section of the city where they left the cars in a gravel pit. They were home before 10 o'clock that night. Tuesday morning tne boys attended their classes at the Provo high school, and after lunch went into the gravel pit where they siphoned the gas from one car into the other. They then drove to Heber where they visited with friends at the Wasatch high school. Returning home shortly after 4 o'clock they met Chief of Police Birk and Officer Of-ficer Davis at Spring Dell, who were out looking for the stolon cars. Recognizing the car driven by the hoys the officers set chase. Traveling at the rate of more than 60 miles an hour, the officers had a difficult time even to keep in the dust of tho fleeing car. The chase led down the canyon, across the bench to Orem and south towards to-wards Springville. Had it not been for the fact that a hayrack going south and a north-bound auto slowed down the progress of the boys, the officers believe thnt the hoys would have made good their escape since the car they were driving driv-ing had more speed than the pursuing pur-suing police car. The boys are hold in the county jail pending the issuance of a com- Plaint against them. The :ibs"ncel from the city of County Attorney' L E. Brockbank made it impossible for the complaint to be issued today, to-day, according to police officers. ' |
