Show Twitchell's Resignation Is Accepted Couch Alvin Twitchell, who has been coaching at the Young university univer-sity for the last four years, has handed in his resignation to President Presi-dent F. S. Harris, to take effect at the close of the present school year in June. A matter of salary was Coach Twitchell's chief reason for resigning. Several colleges have been seeking his services, and Coach Twitchell decided to accept a position posi-tion with one of them to he announced an-nounced later. Coach Twitchell has had success In athletics during his stay at the Brigham Young university, his basketball bas-ketball teams having won the state title three of the four years and the conference championship ouce and his football and other teams having given an. excellent account of themselves. them-selves. Football was in its infancy when Coach Twitchell came to the Brig-ham Brig-ham Young university, but through hnrd word he drilled the men, many of whom had never seen a football game until they furnished interesting interest-ing competition for some of the best teams in the conference. The quality qual-ity of the line work done by the Cougar team was frequently the subject of favorable comment. In spite of the fact that Coach Twitchell was a very busy man owing ow-ing to his many duties as coach, his wrestling team took the state championship cham-pionship two years and finished second sec-ond this year. The "Y" tennis teams have had an equally Interesting run of success during his coaching experience ex-perience at the Brigham Young university. uni-versity. The swimming team, though handicapped by not having a pool in which to practice, won second sec-ond place in the state two years. Before coming to the Young uni- ; versity, Coach Twitchell had coached in the high schools of the state three years. The first year : out of college Twitchell went to Monroe high school where his basketball bas-ketball team won Its division. He then, went to Brigham City as coach of Boxelder high school. While there his basketball and football teams were counted among the best in the state of Utah. It was his unusual success in coaching high school teams and his splendid reputation as an athle'te that brought him his present position posi-tion at the Brigham Young university. univer-sity. When football was re-intro-ciuced in the parent church school after it had been eliminated for nearly twenty years, Director E. L. Roberts cast his eye over the football foot-ball field for a man who could step into the Brigham Young university and build a team in the shortest possible time. He selected Coa-h Twitchell. , Coach Twitchell is a graduate of the Utah Agricultural College. He went to the college from Beaver Academy where he had made a state wide reputation for himself as a forward for-ward in basketball, he having been chosen all state forward during his participation at that school. He went to the Utah Agricultural where he soon won a berth on the Utah Aggie basketball squad and a regular reg-ular berth as tackle on the football team. He graduated in 1017 with a bachelor's degree, but returned to school that fall and participated in football. That year the Utah Aggie team was not defeated and Alvin Twitchell was selected as all-state and all-conference tackle. Coach Twitchell is known for his agreeable disposition and for his willingness to co-operate with other interests of the school. Wherever he goes he will always have friends, one of the fans remarked, wheu be heard that Coach Twitchell was severing his relations with the Brigham Brig-ham Young university, where he has had much to do with establishing the athletics of the school on a plaue that has made the institution popular throughout the conference. |
