Why then, should they be "Hidden under a Bushel." As parents, we are interested interest-ed in the education of the whole child. While academic achievement is vital, we feel that our children should have some of the more enriching experiences of life. If you think this policy is wrong and that worth-while trips should be allowed, sub- Conference because it would, take the students out of school. Then a special request was for a trip after school was out, approved by the parents of the Choir. Next it has been disallowed that they should perform anywhere out of the valley. We feel that the School Board should judge each trip on its own merit and not make a blanket policy that says "No" to every trip no matter how worthwhile it may be. We have been so proud of our Choir in the past and so many young people have benefited bene-fited from their affiliation with the group and its director. direct-or. The excellent training they have received is invaluable and is a great source of supply and strength for future Church choirs and other musical groups. The commendable behavior of our young people on their World's Fair trip and previous choir trips has brought nothing noth-ing but honor to the parents, the school and the community and has been- a source of joy and inspiration to those for whom they have sung and in whose homes they have stayed. This is evidenced by the many letters of praise and appreciation apprecia-tion received in the past by this group. These choir trips are not taken tak-en just for amusement and light-hearted pleasure. These young people feel deeply that they have a service to perform, per-form, something beautiful and Choir parents differ with school hoard Editors note The following letter was received re-ceived this week from a committee com-mittee of parents of a'cappella choir members. The School Board, a body elected by the people to serve them, should reconsider a policy pol-icy which blocks achievement and puts a damper on incentive. incen-tive. This policy of "No Trips" for school groups not only affects af-fects the A Cappella Choir, but any organization which might achieve and have opportunity to perform. Just as a fish needs water to live, so a group of this nature needs opportunity opportun-ity to give of itself and its talents tal-ents in order to survive. From statements and articles ar-ticles already published, we have the impression that the School Board vetoed only the request for a "West Coast Tour." Actually, the first request re-quest denied was the opportunity oppor-tunity to perform at the Western West-ern States Music Educators |
