Narcissi, hyacinths, tulips and crocuses can be potted for flowering. Use only bulbs of best quality. Set them in shal-low pots containing soil with good water-holdin- g capacity and drainage. A satisfactory soil mixture is three parts good garden loam, one part organic matter and two parts sand. Fill the pot with soil to one-ha- lf inch below the rim, leav-ing the tips of bulbs barely ex-posed. Plant hyacinths and narcissi as close together as you can. For tulips, plant five or six bulbs in a five inch pot. Place the pots in a cool place at 40-5- 0 degrees. The soil must be moist while in stor-age. When the roots are well developed, bring the pots into a warm room for forcing. The plants grow best in full sun and in moderately moist soil. When the plants are in full bloom, remove them from the sun to a bright location. The flowers will last longer if you keep them in a fairly cool place. Bayberry Candles Old Tradition To lear your luck for the year they say, Burn a bayberry dip on Christmas day. If the flame burns bright and the light shines clear, Christmas Eve a large candle was burned which could be snuffed out only by one named Mary. Even today the homes that never use a candle, or have one about during the rest of the year, have mantels, windows and dining tables decorated with them during the holiday. Good luck will be yours thru-o- ut the year. This old verse repeats the tradition from the early years of our country that burning the bayberry candle on Christ-mas eve would insure one of along and happy life. The settlers of our country found that the bayberry gave off a wax that would make fine candles. Since animal fats were important as food and for other uses, it was the bayberry candle that was used as much as possible. It was usually the task of the children to gather the berries. Candles have always been associated with Christmas and many legends give them a place in the observance of this holiday. In Ireland, for instance, on It's getting harder and hard-er to support the government in the style to which it is ac-customed. Australian Manu-facturer. |
